چکیده

Research on data quality through the analysis of accuracy and uncertainty has become a major development in GIS science. Fisher’s taxonomy provides solutions for the processing of uncertainty in spatial data representation. However, excavation data differs from geographical data, owing to the specific features of archeology such as incompleteness, temporal and functional aspects. Therefore, archaeological excavation representation requires a GIS tool accounting for its specific needs. This article presents a new taxonomy taking into account the specificity of excavation representation. The authors examine the major theories dealing with the representation of uncertain data, and their use. Finally, they explore the relevance of this taxonomy to knowledge representation in a GIS, and analyze the impact of uncertainty representations according to time and to the shapes of objects in Reims Roman streets.

Implementing an object-oriented error sensitive GIS

Despite considerable research interest in the handling of uncertainty within GIS, the production of what has been described as an error sensitive GIS is still some way off. The increasing use of objectoriented (OO) technology presents a variety of opportunities, but also impediments to the implementation of such an error sensitive GIS. An important barrier stems from the lack of homogeneity wit...

Uncertainty-aware visualization and proximity monitoring in urban excavation: a geospatial augmented reality approach

Background: This research aims to improve the urban excavation safety by creating an uncertainty-aware, geospatial augmented reality (AR) to visualize and monitor the proximity between invisible utilities and digging implements. Excavation is the single largest cause of utility strikes. Utility strikes could be prevented if the excavator operator were able to “see” buried utilities and excavato...

Spatial Data Management Aspects in Archaeological Excavation Documentation1

Archaeological excavation documentation poses several challenges to spatial data management. This work gives a data model, respective query functionality and the description of the resulting prototype system for recording and analyzing the data produced during the course of an excavation. Based on a requirements analysis, we develop a data model that not only captures georeferenced finds (potte...
